Defining a Social Problem
A social problem can be considered as a situation or condition that at some people in a community regard as being objectionable. The entire population is in agreement about some social problems, which includes murders and DWI traffic deaths. Other social problems may be regarded as such by certain groups of people. For example, youngsters enjoying loud music in a public park evidently do not regard it as a problem, but a lot of other people may consider it an undesirable social condition. Some nonsmokers view smoking as an undesirable social condition that should be banned or restricted in public buildings. Read the custom research paper further to learn more about social problems.
Every day the media is full of stories about objectionable social conditions. Examples include crime, violence, drug abuse, and environmental problems. Such social problems occur at the local, state, national and international levels. However, people are mostly concerned with social problems in their own respective communities which consist of the school and school district, a person’s village, town or city and the county. The definitions of conditions are themselves open to conflict and change. At the same time, societies must recognize how “social problems” can be defined in such a manner as to serve the interests of the community at large.
The different examples of social problems usually exist in every community. For example, there could be a problem of increased stealing and vandalism in your school or throughout the school district. Likewise, local police agencies in villages, town, cities and county maintain statistics on crimes such as thefts within their province. In some cases, arguments for the decriminalization of unacceptable activities are made with the view of reducing state budgets rather than out of a sincere benevolence toward people with troubles. Therefore, social problems are turned into individual problems for the purpose of reducing societal responsibilities and activities and for spending less money for community welfare.
In studying social problems, we must pay attention to the divergence of the basic definition of the problem. Even regarding situations with the widespread societal consensus of deviant behavior conflict can emerge regarding the causes and conditions of the behavior e.g., Is it murder when a severely abused woman kills her husband? The moral of this essay is a plea to move the study of social problems closer to the study of how social movements and institutions affect and are affected by the interpretations, the language, and the symbols that constitute seeing a situation as a social problem. It is a plea to see social problems as a process of designation and not only recognition of a given situation.
